I just wish everybody who was playing could experience the day that I just experienced. I will never use the words “unbelievable” and “the Lord” again in the same sentence. It’s just the most amazing day of my life.
試合に出た選手一人一人全員が、僕と同じような日を体験してくれたらと願っています。二度と「信じがたい」と「神」の二つの言葉を一緒に使うようなことはしません。僕の人生で最も驚くべき一日でしたね。

I talked to Schilling about 30 minutes before the game. We were at Yankees Stadium, and you know, he asked me to come over to his locker.  The day Curt Schilling pitches, you don’t talk to him. He’s a man on a mission, and he’s focused. So when he called me over to his locker, I was, you know, thrown aback.  I went over there, and he asked me to pray for him.
試合の三十分ほど前にシリングと話をしたんです。場所はヤンキース・スタジアムでした。彼に呼ばれて彼のロッカーまで行ったんです。普段だったら、彼が登板する日に彼に話しかけるなんて出来ないことなんです。シリングは使命感が強く、試合に心を集中していますからね。だから彼のロッカーに呼ばれた時は、実はとても驚いたんです。それで話は何だったかというと、僕のために祈ってくれって言うんですよ。

When I came out of the game after the 7th inning, I knew what I was going to say afterwards. Win or lose, I knew what I was going to say, because I knew I couldn’t deny what I just experienced.  I couldn’t pawn it off on something other than what it was. Which was the Lord saying to me, “Listen, I’ve been here for 8 years. We’ve had our ups and downs…I’m going to prove to you tonight, I am who I say I am.”  And, I was stuck. There was no way to deny what I had experienced. And I felt so good about it.
その試合の七回で降板してベンチに引き上げた時点で、僕には、試合後に自分が何を言うべきかが分かっていました。勝ち負けに関係なく、僕には自分の言わんとすることが分かっていたんです。というのは、信じられないような一時が本当にあったからです。他にはどうにも説明しようがないんです。神は僕に「いいかい、私は八年もここでお前達の試合を観てきた。お前達には調子の良いときも悪いときもあった。でも、今夜はお前たちに、私が神であることを、証明して見せよう」とおっしゃったんです。僕は唖然としました。自分がその時経験した事を否定する術は僕にはなかったです。なんともいえない、いい感じでした。

It’s that unconditional love that God has for us can help you get through those rough times. You know that he’s not going to leave your side. No matter what, no matter how bad things get, he’s not going to leave your side. He’s going to be there.  And he may have to carry you through that sometimes, but he’s not going to put you in a situation that you can’t handle. If you can put it in that kind of perspective, it helps you deal with adversity or failure a little bit better. 
どんな時でも変わることなく注いでくれる神の愛が、辛い事を乗り越えさせてくれるのだと思います。神は、どんな事があっても、あなたを見捨てたりしません。たとえ何があっても、事態がどんなに悪化した時でも、神はあなたの見方です。神はあなたの側にいつもいてくれます。神は、時には、あなたに試練を与えることもあるでしょう。でも神は、あなたの手に負えないような窮地に追い込むようなことは、絶対にしません。それが分かれば、逆境や失敗などに負けずに生きてゆくことができるようになります。

I wanted to play, and I asked the Lord to just calm my nerves. The last thing you want to do is get in there, and you get nerves that go crazy.  I asked Him to calm my nerves and let me honor him out there on the field. He came through for me today, it wasn’t me swinging that  bat, it was the Lord Jesus Christ.  You know, this is what playoff baseball is all about.
試合をしたかった。神に、僕の心を落ち着かせてくれる様にお願いしました。カチカチに堅くなった状態では試合に出たくありませんでしたからね。神に祈りました。僕を冷静にしてくれと、神のおかげでこんなに立派な試合が出来るんだと言わさせてくれと。神は僕の期待に応えてくれましたよ。あのバットを振ったのは僕じゃなくて、主イエス・キリストだったんです。これがプレーオフなんですよ。

Once I realized that I have an audience of one, and you only have one to please, it makes your failures in things, and in baseball, a lot easier to deal with. There’s a bigger picture on the outside led by God.
僕の観客はたった一人で、その一人だけを喜ばせればいいんだと悟った時、野球や他のことでしくじった時でも、それを乗り越えられます。神に焦点を合わせれば、その他の事はささいな事で、人生は野球の試合での勝ち負けだけじゃないって事を悟ることができるんです。

I wake up and go to bed every night, happy because my life has a purpose.  I’m not better than anyone--- you probably have it on tape---I have done a lot of stupid things.  Being a Christian doesn’t stop you from making mistakes in life. It just gives you someone to answer to 24/7, and we all need that.
僕の人生には目標があるから、朝目覚めて、夜寝るまでつくづく幸せだって思います。他の人と比べて良い人間だというわけじゃなくてね。撮られてると思うけど、いろいろ馬鹿なことをしたりするでしょう。クリスチャンだからって、人生で間違いを起こさなくなるわけじゃなく、ただ、どんな時でも頼れる人がいるってわけです。誰にでも頼れる人って必要なんですよ。

It has made me a more complete person, a better man, a better father, a better husband, a better baseball player.
クリスチャンであることが、僕を、より完全な人間、より良い男、より良い父親、より良い夫、そしてより優秀な野球選手にしてくれたと思っています。

My firstborn son was born dead. And so from where I was holding my son, to where “we’ve gone winning the worlds championship --- that’s a gamut of emotions. But essentially it all pales to eternity.
The only thing that’s been consistent through all of that is my faith.  And so how do you deal with things?  I deal with things through Christ first. In baseball there are ups and downs, but what really counts, what’s eternal, is where your consistency should lie.
僕の長男は死産でした。死んだ息子を抱きかかえた時から、ワールドシリーズでの優勝の時までを考えると、すごい感情の変化ですよ。でも、本質的には、そういう感情はすべて永遠という観点からみると色あせてしまうんです。
僕がいろいろ体験する中で一つだけ変わらなかったものが信仰心でした。どうやって生きてゆけばいいかというと、キリストと共に歩くということです。野球には調子の良い時も悪い時もあるけれど、心の拠り所として本当に大切なものは、不変なものにあるべきなんです。いつもそばにいて、状況や立場によって変わる事なく力づけてくれるのはキリストだってわけです。
